- Preliminary Positive / Non-Negative: the control line appears but the corresponding test line is absent. This is a preliminary screening result rather than definitive laboratory confirmation.
- Invalid: the required control line does not appear. Do not interpret the affected panel; repeat testing according to the product instructions.
The specimen-validity indicators use their own reference chart and should not be interpreted using the drug-panel result-line rules. When a definitive analytical result is required, an appropriate confirmatory laboratory method should be used according to the applicable testing procedure.
How to Read the Screening Results
Interpret each drug assay individually within the manufacturer’s specified reading window.
- Negative: Both the control line and test line appear. A faint visible test line is interpreted according to the supplied instructions.
- Non-negative / presumptive positive: The control line appears, but the test line is absent.
- Invalid: The control line is absent, regardless of whether a test line appears.
An assay without a control line cannot provide a valid screening result. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for repeating an invalid test.
