Cup, Dip Card or Strip: Which Format Fits

The right CLIA waived drug test format depends on how your site collects urine and how many drugs you need to screen.

Urine Drug Test Cups

A cup collects the specimen and runs the screen in one device. Cups in this category range from 5 to 17 panels and come in 90 mL and 120 mL sizes.

Multi-Panel Dip Cards

A dip card is dipped into a urine sample collected in a separate container. Multi-panel cards here cover 6 to 17 panels, and a few cards screen for a single drug. See all multi-panel dip cards for more configurations.

Single-Drug Test Strips

A strip screens for one drug, such as fentanyl, THC or cocaine. Several strips carry a Forensic Use Only label, so read the product page before you order.

CLIA Waived Status and Product Labels

Waived status applies to a specific test system and its listed drugs, so a CLIA waived drug test label on one product does not cover another. A product with the same panel count or a similar name can have a different status.

Check the label on each product page:

• Labeled CLIA waived: for point-of-care screening at sites enrolled in the CLIA program.
• Labeled Forensic Use Only: for law enforcement, courts, probation, corrections and forensic laboratories. Those programs can also compare our Forensic Use Drug Test Cups.

A site that performs waived testing under a CLIA Certificate of Waiver still has to enroll in the CLIA program and follow the manufacturer's test instructions. Our CLIA certificate guide covers how to get one.

Choosing Panels and Cutoff Levels

Start from the drugs your program must screen for, then compare cutoffs across CLIA waived drug tests. Two tests with the same number of panels may still use different cutoff levels.

• Fentanyl: a dedicated FEN panel is available on several cups and dip cards, and as a single-drug strip.
• Opiates: some tests use OPI/300 and others OPI/2000, so match the cutoff your program follows.
• Treatment monitoring: buprenorphine (BUP) and methadone (MTD) panels appear on many cups and dip cards.
• No THC: some configurations leave out marijuana, such as the 11 panel cup and one 6 panel dip card.

Screening Results and Lab Confirmation

A CLIA waived urine drug test gives preliminary, qualitative results. Send any non-negative screen to a laboratory for confirmation, following your program's procedure, before making a final decision.
