What is Dextromethorphan?

Dextromethorphan (often abbreviated as DXM) is a non-opioid cough suppressant. It works by acting on the brain’s cough center to reduce the urge to cough. Commonly found in over-the-counter cold medicines, DXM is included in well-known brands such as:

  • Coricidin® HBP Cough & Cold

At normal therapeutic doses, DXM is safe and effective. However, at higher doses, it can cause dissociation, hallucinations, and euphoria—effects that some people intentionally seek. This has led to the recreational misuse of DXM, sometimes referred to as “robotripping” or “skittling.”

How to Use the Dextromethorphan Dip Card

  • Remove the dip card from its foil pouch.
  • Remove the cap and immerse the test strips in the urine sample for 10–15 seconds.
  • Lay flat and wait 5 minutes for results.
  • Read results at 5 minutes – do not interpret after 10 minutes.

Interpreting Results

  • Positive: One colored band in the control (C) region.
  • Negative: Two colored bands (C and T regions).
  • Invalid: No band in the control (C) region – retest with a new device.
