Understanding Preliminary EtG Alcohol Results

Rapid EtG screens give preliminary, qualitative results. A non-negative result should be confirmed by a laboratory method according to your program’s procedure. EtG can also come from incidental alcohol exposure, so set your program’s cutoff and confirmation policy with care. A cutoff level is a detection threshold, not a measure of impairment. Instant cups are not authorized for DOT-regulated testing under 49 CFR §40.210.
