Gabapentin

Different kinds of gabapentin (for example, immediate-release, sustained-release, enacarbil sustained-release) are absorbed in the body differently. Do not change from one form to another without consulting your physician. Gabapentin is used with other drugs to prevent and control seizures. Additionally it is used to ease nerve pain after shingles (a painful rash due to herpes zoster disease ) in adults. Gabapentin is called an anticonvulsant or antiepileptic medication. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy.

Read the Medication Guide and, if available, the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist before you begin taking gabapentin and every time you get a refill.
Antacids containing magnesium or aluminum may interfere with the absorption of the medication. Consequently, if you’re also taking an antacid, it’s ideal to take gabapentin at least two hours after taking the antacid.

Take this medicine regularly to get the maximum benefit from it. This medication works best when the amount of medication in your body is kept at a constant level. Therefore, take gabapentin at evenly spaced intervals in precisely the exact same time(s) daily. If you are taking this medicine 3 times per day to control seizures, don’t let over 12 hours pass between doses as your seizures may increase.

Don’t take this medicine more often or increase your dose without consulting your physician. Your condition won’t improve any faster and the risk of serious side effects may increase.
Don’t stop taking this medicine without consulting your physician. Some conditions may become worse when the drug is abruptly stopped. Your dose may have to be gradually diminished.

It’s quite important to follow your physician’s dosing instructions exactly. During the first few days of therapy, your doctor may gradually increase your dose so that your body can adjust to the medicine.

If you’re taking the pills and your doctor directs you to split the pill in half, take another half-tablet in your next scheduled dose. Discard half pills if not used within a few days of dividing them. If you’re taking the capsules, swallow them whole with loads of water.
